If you ever drive along the A35, pass the Baker Arms roundabout your come across a few signs next to the road that advertise a few small businesses within the area and the Old Piggery Garden Centre is one of these. The garden centre itself is based inside Bere Farms old piggery site, I guess the name had to come from somewhere?
When I last visited, there was a small shop within the old farm buildings that also harbour a number of different businesses, and the outer bit was a few metres away at the back of this, with a derelict building as an eye sore in the middle. Customers would have to go backwards and forwards to buy items and to me it just wasn’t the best of layouts.
Fast forward to 2021 and this place looks great! When driving into Bere Farm the revamped car park area now has gravel spaces and you’re able to see the garden centre straight away. The derelict building has been opened up and is now used as the hub, with a proper place to pay for items, it’s a walk through building so access to the outside of the garden centre and hosts a fantastic range of antique, rustic and local items. The outside spaces showcases a range of pots, obelisks, antique statues, shrubs, flowers and zinc planters. If your lucky like me and go on a really sunny day it’s a beautiful place for any gardener to find something to take home.
The Old Piggery is one of the only places that I’ve come across that still sell David Austin Roses and for a good price. With a range of colours to choose from this place is definitely the place to go if your looking for a great quality rose for your garden.
Their main sellers are their incredible Cretan pots. Sourced from Crete these are authentic hand thrown, frost proof terracotta pots and I must say they do look incredible.
So if your looking for somewhere to go and buy something new for the garden, thinking of some new seasonal shrubs or flowers and want somewhere local and not a big standard garden centre, then this is the place for you.
