Dinner at The Larder House

After months of walking past this place and stating we need to go, Jack and myself finally booked a well-deserved date night at The Larder House.

Found on the main high street of Southbourne, this place looks small and quant from the outside. But don’t let that fool you. There is ample sitting inside, a large seating area out towards the garden and space to sit around the bar. The Larder House itself is unique, the staff are enthusiastic abut what they offer, and each dish brought out to you tells its own little story.

The Food

All food seems to be locally sourced with fish from Mudeford and a lot of the vegetables come in from Sopley Farm. This is something that I love and I’m passionate about supporting local where I can. It’s also a bonus knowing where the food on your plate is coming from.

There is so much on the menu here that I’d eat that it was hard to choose but, in the end, we opted for four small plates and two large plates to share between Jack and myself.

  • Dorset Oyster with Rhubarb Hot Sauce
  • Crisp Potatoes and Aioli
  • Smoked Halloumi with Elderflower and Spring Onions
  • White Anchovies
  • Whole Mudeford Mackerel with Leeks and Nduja
  • Mudeford Cuttlefish with Oyster Mushrooms and Trail of Tears Beans

We were pre-warned when ordering our food that it would come out at different times and when ready, as everything is cooked fresh. I had no problem with this, and actually, it worked perfectly as I didn’t get too full too quickly.

The food was incredible, each dish had something different about it and came with a garnish or side that complimented the main part perfectly. My favourite dishes from above were the Smoked Halloumi with Elderflower and Spring Onions and the Mudeford Cuttlefish with Oyster Mushrooms and Trail of Tears Beans.

This is place for special occasions. A place for that date night and a special get together with friends or the family. It’s not somewhere I’d go regularly. Why? It would ruin the experience! Having said that I would recommend that you need to try this place at least once!
