Donkeys, countryside walks, good food and plenty to see – a lovely day out on the Dorset side of Devon.
There are some places you visit and immediately think, “Why haven’t I been here before?” and The Donkey Sanctuary was definitely one of those for me.
Back in September, I visited the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary while on a little adventure with my sister, exploring the Dorset side of Devon. I honestly had no idea just how big the place was! With acres of land, hundreds of donkeys and plenty to explore, you could easily spend a good few hours wandering around. Even better, entry is free, which is always a bonus when you’re planning a day out.
Since that first visit, it’s become a bit of a tradition for me. Whenever I’m on a Devon staycation, I always make a stop at The Donkey Sanctuary on my way home. It’s the perfect excuse to stretch my legs, say hello to the donkeys and have one last little wander around before heading back to Dorset.
A wander around the sanctuary
We decided to explore on our own rather than take a guided tour, and there was plenty to see as we made our way around the grounds. You can wander through the fields, visit the barns, see the memorial walls and even have a go at finding your way through the maze. And, of course, there are donkeys everywhere! It’s such a peaceful setting and a lovely opportunity to see these beautiful animals while learning more about the work The Donkey Sanctuary does.
Time for lunch
After all that walking, we needed some food! The Kitchen, the sanctuary’s restaurant, has a good selection on the menu. I went for the cheese and chutney sandwich, which came freshly made with salad and crisps. Exactly what I needed after wandering around the sanctuary.
And naturally, no visit is complete without a little look around the gift shop. I couldn’t resist a pair of rather fabulous crazy blue donkey socks. Did I need them? Absolutely not. Did I buy them anyway? Of course!
If you’re visiting the Sidmouth area, I’d definitely recommend putting The Donkey Sanctuary on your list. It’s a lovely place to spend a few hours, whether you’re visiting with family, friends or, like me, enjoying a little sister adventure.
