Blood Monkey is an Irish Craft gin based on the old 17th Century Genever recipe and its name actually comes from the same era too. Named after the bleeding of the monkey, when 17th Century sailors drilled into the officers’ barrel to steal the liquor inside. It’s a gin like I’ve never tasted before and safe to say I think this is the quickest a bottle of gin has ever disappeared!!
It’s got punchy citrus notes that I love in a gin, then a weirdly satisfying caramel smoothness. A few people have stated it’s a bit like a white whiskey and for someone who hates whiskey I really can’t say if this is true or not. It’s an absolutely banging gin and has to be one of the best I’ve tried!
There were a few serving suggestions on the bottle so I have tried this gin three ways just to ensure I like it!
Firstly was with Fever Tree Light Tonic and garnished with some fresh orange slices. I’d happily drink it that way and it brings out the citrus.
Secondly was with Orange Juice and my god, this was a game changer. To be fair you’d probably get through a few too many way too easily drinking it this way.
Thirdly was with Cloudy Apple Juice and again the same reaction as with the orange. You would not know there was gin in there apart from it brings an incredible smoothness to juice.
