The Rum Sailor

Tall Ships, an old cobbled harbour oh and Rum! What more could you want in a beautiful seaside location that reminds you of a Pirates dream?

Overlooking the Tall Ships of Charlestown Harbour, The Rum Sailor can be found in the side of the harbour wall and was once used as the old clay stores before being converted into a bar. This place is only outside seating, so therefore believe it is another one of those places that is weather dependant. Open from 5pm in the week and 1pm on weekends this is a fabulous place to stop and watch the world go by. Our visit was on a fabulous hot sunny day and who doesn’t want to sit in the sun day drinking in a beautiful location? To be fair we didn’t think that we would stay in Charlestown long enough, but after having a few drinks somewhere else first and then realising the time, we couldn’t leave without trying it right? All I can say is thank god we didn’t!

The staff come up to take your order, so know need to move and they are also great at recommending Rums to try, wish with over 300 on their menu it’s pretty hard to decide or know what they have. Both Jackie and I like spiced, banana and caramel rums so we opted for asking for Rums with this as their base and asked for a mixer to compliant it, which to that we just got told ginger beer or Pepsi. I love Ginger beer with any spiced or caramel rums so had this with my three serves and Jackie went with Pepsi. It’s so interesting how the mixer can make a spirit taste so different, another reason I love experimenting when trying Gins normally.

I couldn’t tell you what Rums we tried, but all I can say is if you are visiting Charlestown in the week and want to feel a bit like Jack Sparrow sitting in the sun while drinking Rum, then definitely wait around for this place to open! If you visit at the weekend though you don’t have to wait too long as it opens around lunchtime.
