Tall ships, an old, cobbled harbour and, of course, rum. What more could you want from a beautiful seaside location that feels like something straight out of a pirate’s dream?
Overlooking the tall ships of Charlestown Harbour, The Rum Sailor is tucked into the harbour wall. The building was once used as the old clay stores before being transformed into a rum bar.
It’s an outdoor-only spot, so the weather plays a part. We visited on a gorgeous sunny day, which made it the perfect place for a bit of daytime drinking while watching the world go by.
The Rum Sailor opens from 5pm during the week and from lunchtime at weekends. We hadn’t planned to stay in Charlestown long enough to visit, but after a few drinks elsewhere we realised we were still there when it opened. Obviously, we couldn’t leave without trying it!
Time for Rum
The staff come to your table to take your order and were brilliant at recommending rums to try. With over 300 rums on the menu, knowing where to start can be a little tricky!
Jackie and I both tend to go for spiced, banana and caramel rums, so we asked for recommendations based around those flavours. We were then given the choice of ginger beer or Pepsi as a mixer.
I went for ginger beer with all three of my serves, while Jackie opted for Pepsi. It was actually really interesting tasting the difference the mixer made. It’s another reason I love experimenting with drinks, the right mixer can completely change the flavour of a spirit.
I honestly couldn’t tell you which rums we tried, but they were all good enough to make me very glad we’d decided to stay!
If you’re visiting Charlestown and fancy feeling a little bit like Jack Sparrow while sitting in the sunshine with a rum in hand, The Rum Sailor is worth a visit. Just check the opening times if you’re visiting during the week, as you’ll need to wait until the evening.
